Performance for two dancers in an outdoor environment.
Duration: 4-7 minutes.
The choreographic structure of GaPS is formed in the spaces between locations read by a GPS device. Two dancers emerge from the pedestrian environment of downtown Providence. Armed with the GPS device, they begin to move along a straight trajectory described by a choreographed phrase. As they move through the urban space, a custom mediascape installed on the device plays a sound each time a new location is "fixed." This cue alerts the dancers to immediately cease performing the phrase, reset their bodies on a new trajectory, and begin the phrase again. The dancers thus repeat the phrase in the spatial and temporal gaps between GPS readings. The structure of the choreography is thereby determined by GaPS in the locative media technology.
